If you’re paying with cash, the following is due when you pick up your equipment:

  • In-Town trailer - $60 or towing: $75 or estimated rental charges (whichever is greater).

How much weight can my Capital City Trailer Rentals trailer carry?

There are several factors that go into determining your trailer’s recommended cargo weight. Keep in mind that although there are decals on the trailer that indicate the trailer’s towing capacity, this is not the same as the recommended weight.

To find your recommended cargo weight, Capital City Trailer Rentals will validate the combination of your specific tow vehicle, that vehicle’s hitch system rating and the capacity of the specific trailer that will be used. We then calculate the recommended cargo weight and note it on your rental contract.

What do I do if my trailer is fishtailing or whipping?

Fishtailing or whipping is not normal. It is caused by mis-loaded cargo. Speed will make it worse. Slow down, get to a safe place where you can reposition your load and put more weight in the front of the trailer. A good rule of thumb is to put 60% of the cargo weight in the front of the trailer. Use plenty of tie-downs to keep the cargo from shifting while you travel.

What else do I need to know about hauling with a trailer?
Some loads appear small but are dense and heavy. Items such as boxes of books, food products, building materials and firewood are much heavier than regular household furnishings. You may only fill the trailer 1/3 full with these types of goods before exceeding the max weight of the trailer. Sand and gravel are even heavier. Do not overload the allowed weight indicated on your contract.
Why was my hitch quote one price and more when it was installed?

Your hitch quote includes the cost of the hitch. Some additional costs include the installation, purchase of proper wiring and other modifications found during the time of the install.

Can I take a Capital City Trailer Rentals trailer across the U.S./Canadian or U.S./Mexico border?

For Canada: Yes, you are permitted to cross the U.S./Canadian border during a move. You will be subject to any laws and regulations governing the border. For the latest information call one of the numbers below.

Canada Border Services Agency: 204-983-3500

U.S. Customs and Border Protection: 703-526-4200

For Mexico: At this time, Capital City Trailer Rentals does not have locations in Mexico and our equipment is not permitted to cross the U.S./Mexico border.

How do I find my hitch system rating?

To find your hitch system rating, start by examining the three trailer hitch components:

  • The hitch

  • The ball mount

  • The trailer ball

Each component is rated for the amount of weight it can haul. The lowest rating of the three components determines the overall rating of your total hitch system. For example, if you have a 3,500 lb. hitch and ball mount with a 2,000 lb. trailer ball, your hitch system is limited to the 2,000 lb. trailer ball towing capacity.

Are Capital City Trailer Rentals cargo trailers rain proof / weather resistant?

Capital City Trailer Rentals Cargo (enclosed) trailers are weather and water resistant. If you are moving during inclement weather, it is possible to track moisture into the trailer while loading or unloading. We always recommend packing your important items in waterproof containers. When moving mattresses, use mattress bags to protect your valuable mattresses from moisture and dust that can occur during a move.

Do Capital City Trailer Rentals trailers have tie-downs?

All Capital City Trailer Rentals Utility and Cargo Trailers have multiple heavy-duty d-rings and other areas to secure your cargo in place with your own customer-provided rope, straps and tie-downs. Check out our wide selection of rope and tie-downs!

Towing equipment comes with tire straps that fit most standard size tires and security chains to secure the towed vehicle to the towing device. If your towed vehicle has oversized tires, please review alternative tie-down methods for proper attachment points. Ratchet tie-downs are available for you to purchase online or at your neighborhood Capital City Trailer Rentals location.

What is the right way to load a trailer?

Loading a trailer correctly is crucial for safe hauling and trailer functionality. These are some tips for loading your Capital City Trailer Rentals trailer the right way during your move:

  • Always load heavier in front of the trailer, which is the end that is attached to the tow vehicle.

  • Place about 60% of the weight of your cargo in front of the center load line as indicated in the trailer.

  • Heavier items should be loaded first and lighter items can be placed on top and to the rear.

  • Secure your cargo in place with rope or tie-downs. This will help protect your items and keep them from shifting during transit.

What are alternative tie downs for the auto transport?

Ratchet tie-downs are available for you to purchase online or at your neighborhood Capital City Trailer Rentals location.

How do you load towing equipment?

Loading your vehicle onto a tow dolly or auto transport is easy and can take less than 15 minutes!
